Three days after the job offer was made, Renee sat at her desk tapping a pen on a stack of papers. As with most of her career decisions, she didn’t consult anyone for advice. If she made a decision, she only wanted herself to blame.

Mr. Kotlarczyk didn’t pressure her. From experience, he knew Renee didn’t like to be pushed or persuaded into anything. He respected her space. Still, Renee wasn’t going to take advantage of the situation. Mr. Engleton and the executive board were running a business, and they needed to fill the position with a qualified person.

Renee put her hands together and prayed. God, please help me make the right decision. Getting up from her swivel chair, Renee smoothed out the wrinkles in her rayon blouse as best she could. Small steps toward the door were quickly replaced with large ones. It’s time to get this over with, she said to herself, hurrying out of her office.

“I’ll be down the hall if anybody needs me,” she told Bianca as she passed her desk. Renee continued walking down the long hall; her heart beating faster with each step. What she was about to tell her boss would change her life forever.

Mr. Kotlarczyk’s door was open when she arrived. Busy reading a document in a binder, he didn’t see Renee walk up. She went to speak, but nothing came out so she coughed lightly. Mr. Kotlarczyk looked up and smiled, closing the binder quickly. “Hey, Renee. What can I do for you?”

“Do you have a minute,” she queried, her voice still a bit weak.

He pushed his chair away from his desk and stood to his feet. “Of course I do. Come in and have a seat,” he said, pointing to a chair in front of his desk.

He waited for Renee to be seated and sat back down. “What’s on your mind?”

Renee took a deep breath before speaking. “When I first started at the front desk in college, I was pretty confident that I’d move up the ranks. But, I honestly thought my current position was the best I would do. I never dreamed I’d go any further than this.” Renee folded her hands in her lap to keep from shaking. “So, I sit here with an offer to become the general manager of a large hotel chain. What a blessing. And for you, Mr. Engleton, and Mr. Coleman to think that I could handle such a challenge means a lot to me. It really does.”

Renee paused, feeling her emotions getting the best of her. Mr. Kotlarczyk was becoming emotional, too. Only Renee could bring out this side of him in the workplace. To keep from shedding tears, he spoke. “So, my dear, what’s the verdict?”

Taking both of her hands, Renee wiped her eyes and sighed. Then, in one breath she blurted, “I’m officially accepting the offer.” Her face beamed as she looked at the smile on her boss’s face. But, behind her own smile, she wondered how Jerome was going to take this news.
